Flooding Brings Wastewater Challenges
The recent Mississippi River flooding has created havoc across a half of dozen States. Houses, farmland, historical landmarks have been submerged as the river has hit flood levels unseen since 1927. Fortunately, many urban areas have been spared as a result of a series of spillways that were constructed to divert floodwaters.
One result of the opening of the spillways is that enormous amounts of fertilizer, oil, pesticides, trash and farm runoff is being dumped over land, streams and tributaries. These pollutants and toxins saturate the groundwater as well as carry into the wastewater systems of municipalities.
