Bot development made fun
Dunedin, FL, May 12, 2011 – Mintek Mobile Data Solutions Inc. announced today four of its highly regarded development team members are participating in Windows online RockPaperAzure contest. The RockPaperAzure challenge engages developers to code a bot (scripted program) using the Azure cloud platform that will compete against others in an online version of the well known rock, paper, scissors game.
The Windows Azure cloud platform allows users to devise their bots using C#, F# or Visual Basic and then submit them to run against each other with points given for each victory. The challenge makes use of some gamification concepts by creating a leader board showing weekly results. Participants have the opportunity to win a Kinect, Xbox 360 or a gift certificate each week throughout the duration of the challenge.
This approach has benefits for both Microsoft and developers. The RockPaperAzure challenge attracts more developers by making it fun and a place for developers to demonstrate their skills. Microsoft benefits by gaining exposure to its new cloud platform, building brand recognition, obtaining feedback from developers and potential sales after the free Azure 30 day trial period has expired.
“The game is suspenseful and brings gamification to programming” says Fred Johnson, winner of a Kinect in week 5 of the challenge. Bruce Knapp adds, “It is cool because it is a fun way to try out Azure”.
Keeping up with cloud platforms also helps Mintek stay ahead in the EAM software arena as a result of the new ideas that are introduced. Congratulations to Fred Johnson, Bruce Knapp, Will Stout and Jacob Lafond for playing and learning.
